This is my husband hiking through the California Poppies in Antelope Valley, California.
There is abundant wildlife, such as; coyotes, bobcats, badgers, lizards, birds, rabbits, insects, butterflies and SNAKES!
It's the snakes we keep our eyes OPEN for!
I came up upon this little guy in the parking lot as we ended our day.
Several people were admiring it and we decided it must be a harmless (I hope)
young gopher snake.
There are RULES while visiting the Poppy Preserve!
One is...You will NOT disturb the wildlife!
Another is...You will NOT step off the trail!
There are about 8 miles of trails in this reserve...It's fabulous!

But, this little guy was crawling across the parking lot and likely to be run over by a car.
With no park ranger around, we decided that someone should move it back into the fields of flowers.
Not ME!
But, a brave man picked it up and walked it nicely to a much safer place.

It kind of looks like the gopher snake pictured on the reserve brochure?
It's definitely NOT the Mojave Rattlesnake which is commonly found...
I can't believe this snake needs to slither across a hot parking lot when the hills go on forever!
You can see a few people out on the trails.
For anyone living or visiting the Los Angeles area...this place is worth the drive this time of year!

oh my goodness, so much beauty!! What a year for flowers! I miss this time in Ca. Gorgeous photos.
Wow what a huge area of poppies.
The poppy fields are glorious. It's the season for snakes, I guess. In the past couple days I've seen several pictures of snakes in blogs that I follow, mine included!

Hmmmm. It is curious that the snake would choose to cross the hot parking lot. The poppy preserve is amazingly beautiful. I have never seen photos of it before and I am so amazed!
What wonderful photos. I'm glad someone helped that poor little guy along. Well captured my friend. :)
strange, I had posted about a snake in my other site.
A snake that came to my nephew's house in Australia.
awesome, awesome! Yes! This place is fantastic...must visit. Love those fields, just beautiful, and the snake too. I'm a fan of snakes - i'm glad someone moved him to safety :) I actually found a snake in the trail today and picked up - but he ended up emitting his stinky defense mechanisim on my hand...wow, talk about a horrible smell!
Love the post, Carolyn!
What an amazing landscape! Have never seen anything like this before. Love the scenery!
What a gorgeous Reserve! I would love to spend time there, minus the snake though..You're brave enough to come close for pictures!
I love the lighting and shadows on the snake shot. Well done.
The fields of poppies are fantastic. I know the snake was happier being removed from the dangerous parking lot. I'm also not crazy about picking them up.
Those fields of poppies are incredible! And snakes are always fun to see, I find them occasionally in my yard.
Carolyn: Neat flowers and wonderful colors on the snake.
the picture of your husband hiking on top of the hill carpeted with poppies is absolutely awesome, gorgeous shots. Wanted to go here too, wonder if the flowers would still be good next week.
Wow, nice snake!:-)
Wow! Great post! I'm amazed at the poppy fields, never seen so many before, how beautiful!
I am so envious of all these flower fields you have within your reach.
Another beautiful post - uh, minus the snake. :)
