These photos were taken at Joshua Tree National Park at Keys View, which is nearly 6,000 ft. in elevation.

Straight across the center of the desert floor, horizontally, is the San Andreas Fault which runs through the Coachella Valley in southern California.
This fault runs parallel to the California coastline for about 800 miles and in some places is 10 miles deep.
This part of it can be readily seen from the higher elevations on a clear day.
It was a bit overcast last weekend so the view appears hazy.

We were able to get a very nice view of it from this area.
I have stood on the edge of it closer to my own home...which is scary when I think about how close we are.
The dark horizontal streak is easily visible in this photo.

I didn't realize I was looking at the fault when I stood in that spot. Great shot.
Where state 14 crosses the San Andreas in Palmdale you can see the twisted layers of rock, it's quite dramatic.
