That's My World Tuesday / Palm Springs Tram

We drove out to Palm Springs, California to take the tram to the top of Mt. San Jacinto.
It was 111 degrees on the desert floor and only 70 degrees on the top of the mountain.
That's a 41 degree drop in temperature.
You can see the green below.
Snow melt from the top creates a beautiful stream that keeps everything green in that strip of desert.
This is the tram after it arrived at the top of Mt. San Jacinto.
The elevation is nearly 9,000 feet here.
We walked around the edge of Grubbs View, which offers a 360 degree view of the valley and wilderness.
There are 54 miles of back country hiking trails up here.
Some ride the tram with some serious backpacks for some serious back country hiking.
The desert was awesome...so colorful.
We were looking in the direction of Las Vegas, which is a good distance away.
This is our shadow on the rocks as we descended back to the Valley Station in Palm Springs.
It was after 5:00 p.m. and a perfect time for a bold shadow!

Window Views and Doors Too / Historical Homes of Palm Springs, California USA
It is quite entertaining to drive (or walk) through the historical part of Palm Springs, which is just west of downtown and beneath San Jacinto Mountain.
The doors and windows, alone, could keep me happy and busy with my camera.

Weekend Reflections / Palm Springs Tramway
My previous post showed the Palm Springs Tramway and the top of Mt. San Jacinto Mountain.
This is a reflection of the mountain top in the window of the tram station.
This is another reflection in the same window but in a section that had better light.
You can see the cables leading up to the mountain top.
It was very cold and windy on the top and a pleasant 65 degrees on the desert floor.
The base station is at the 2000 ft. elevation.
You can see lights glowing from inside the building!

SkyWatch Friday and Looking at the Sky on Friday / Palm Springs Tramway
This is the Palm Springs Tramway which rises from the 2000 ft level to the top of Mt. San Jacinto Mountain.
It is covered with at least 4 ft. of snow right now.
A new storm was coming in from the Pacific and it was very windy and cold up there!
You can see the tram coming back down to the base station.
We drove from the desert floor to about the 2000 ft level to check out a hiking trail that follows this canyon upward!
Not for us!
It is definitely way beyond our hiking capabilities!
Yikes!
After enjoying the scenery up here and talking to some people getting off the tram, we headed back down to have some dinner near Palm Springs...La Quinta, California.
This is the view coming down the mountain...look north eastward at the desert floor.
And...by the way...there is a lot of green on that desert floor right now!
The desert wildflowers will be popping out soon!
You can see a few of the desert windmills out there...just a few.
There are SO many more!
They seem to be multiplying like rabbits!
It was after 4 p.m., February 24, 2010.
We were in in the shadows of the mountains looking at the light to the northeast.
The clouds were an assortment of colors and creating amazing shadows on the landscape.

Scenic Sunday / Tahquitz Canyon, Palm Springs, California
My husband and I returned to Palm Springs yesterday to do some hiking in Tahquitz Canyon. This area is Indian reservation land and a fee of $12.50 is collected before stepping foot on to the trail, which is true of all the Indian lands in this region.
Centuries ago, ancestors of the Agua Caliente Cahuilla (pronounced Kaw-we-ah) Indians settled in the Palm Springs area. They developed complex communities in the Tahquitz, Chino and Indian Canyons. The Cahuilla Indians thrived with an abundant water supply, plants and animals.
Of the reservations 32,000 acres of land, some 6,500 lie within the Palm Springs city limits. The remaining sections fan out across the desert and mountains in a checkerboard pattern.
Tahquitz Canyon and three southern canyons are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
These canyons are especially sacred to the Indians today. Visitors are requested to enjoy the serene beauty and leave only footsteps behind.
The above photograph was taken at the mouth of Tahquitz Canyon looking back at the city of Palm Springs. The following photos will show the sights along the trail heading into the canyon and then the loop scenes as we return to the starting point.
The stream had a fair amount of water for this time of year. It will be far more impressive in the late spring and early summer when the snow melts at the higher elevations above the desert floor.
Rock Art
The Costa Hummingbird...I couldn't get a clear focus on this little guy because a breeze kept the bush moving. I wish I had changed my camera to a faster shutter speed.
Remnants of the Lebacho-Tahquitz Creek Ditch mark this area. Originally built in 1830 by the Cahuilla to bring water from the canyon to the village for drinking and irrigation.
This is Sacred Rock which is one of the oldest Cahuilla village sites. Rock art, bedrock mortors mark this sacred place. Artifacts found here date back 1000-1600 years ago.

Massive Rock Walls surround the canyon on both sides.
There is bold color along the way,
and the reward at the back of the canyon is this...
sixty foot waterfall which changes depending on snow melt at the higher elevations.
This sight will be far more impressive during the late spring and early summer...but, the hike in to see it will be HOT compared to the winter months.
