Mt. Whitney/Mammoth Lakes & Eastern Yosemite Trip (July 20-24 , 2009)
Mt. Whitney stands at an amazing 14, 495 feet. It is the highest mountain in all of the continental United States, or lower 48 as we often say.
You can drive up to "Whitney Portal" but it is a 3-4 day back-packing trip beyond that point. My brother has done this climb and made it to the top more than once! He says he will do it again in the near future. The gateway to Mt. Whitney is Lone Pine, California which is a small and charming little town on U.S. Highway 395.
The following link tells the story of a hike up to the summit of Mt. Whitney. It also has additional links of photos, etc. Enjoy!
